Can I wear this? checks color combinations using practical menswear rules — not taste, trends, or fake precision.

1. Verdicts, not fake precision

The engine still uses an internal score to compare options, but the app does not treat 72 vs. 78 as a meaningful truth. What matters is the verdict and the fix: wear it, close, or change one piece.

  • Wear it — balanced enough to trust as-is.
  • Works — wearable, with one small tweak that could sharpen it.
  • Close — one piece is making the outfit harder to pull off.
  • Don't wear it — the colors clash or overwhelm each other.

2. Color families

Each color is classified into a menswear family. Neutrals (white, grey, black) and denim blues anchor almost anything. Earth tones (beige, brown, olive) play well together. Brights (red, emerald, orange) carry the most visual weight and need breathing room.

A special rule: blue jeans count as neutral because in menswear, denim is the default bottom. A navy top does not get the same pass.

3. Role weights

Not every garment matters equally. The bottom carries the most weight (1.3x) because it sits at the visual center of the silhouette. Outerwear (1.2x) frames the whole look. The top (1.0x) and shoes (0.8x) support from there. Socks sit at the smallest weight (0.4x) — even shown socks are a small area of color.

This means a loud pair of pants drags the score down more than loud shoes would, and a loud sock will barely move the verdict on its own.

4. Pairwise harmony

The engine checks every pair of garments against each other. Classic combos — like navy + beige, olive + brown, or denim + white — support the verdict. Two pieces in the same family with enough brightness separation also work well.

Clashes happen when two saturated colors sit at an awkward hue angle (roughly 40–80° apart). Complementary colors (opposites on the wheel) only pass when one is muted, darker, or balanced by a neutral.

Socks are graded separately: they're compared against the trousers and any accent piece (top or jacket) rather than the whole outfit, and hidden socks are treated as background — the color barely counts.

5. Global outfit checks and fixes

Beyond individual pairs, the engine looks at the whole picture:

  • Anchor — at least one neutral or denim piece should ground the outfit. Without it, saturated colors feel unmoored.
  • Loudness — total color energy is weighted by garment importance. Too much energy across too many pieces triggers a penalty.
  • Flatness — if every piece is the same brightness, the silhouette collapses into one blob. A range of light and dark keeps it readable.
  • Fix suggestions — when the look is close or off, the app tests one-piece swaps and recommends the smallest change that improves the outfit.
